i was at the hospital since morning. just came back just now. dad's not in the best of shape. don't worry, let's just pray that he will get better. he needs to get better. my dad's not the best father in the world, i can vouch that. but he is my dad, and i love him and he loves me, and that's all that matters sometimes. he's been there for me, all these while. though he doesn't say it, i know he's proud of me and has high hopes for me too. i just hope that i can fulfill his hopes, his expectations of me, whatever they are.
anyways, the night before my dad was warded, we were at the emergency place of the hospital. the place was packed with people: sick, healthy, young, old, critical, not critical. i am suddenly reminded of a chapter in A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hoseini where one of the female lead characters described the condition of the hospitals in Kabul; stuffy, crowded, sweaty smell, floor covered with blood, people dying. gruesome description of a hospital in a war torn country. i am thankful that Malaysia isn't like that. though service was kinda slow, but at least the place is safe, and quite comfy. instead of being anxious all the time, we had the time to laugh and smile and make a few minor jokes. then i went back home because i didn't bring my meds along. i have to take my meds. i am not healthy too but my mum stayed there all night with my dad because my mum's loving that way and my dad clings to my mum like a baby.
woke up early to the news that my dad will have to be warded. called mum and asked her about dad's condition. not good, she said. so i got out of bed, took my meds and called my mum a few times asking bout my dad whether he has gotten into the ward or not. belum, she said. then she asked me if i could come over to the hospital so she could go back home and rest and freshen up and i said, yeah mum of course. your uncle's gonna pick you up, she said. yeah, o.k. so i got up again and showered and packed my things. my uncle came by and after a few minutes i was out of the house. the car ride was quiet. most probably because i was tired but maybe because i was worried too.
arrived at the hospital, my mum looking grim and tired. she's 50. so is my dad. went to see my dad. he had tubes stuck up his nose. never seen him like that. such a strong man before, now beaten and weak. his temperature was still high, his blood pressure all the same. i salam-ed him and he was glad to see me. i asked him how he was. didn't need to really, but it was the only thing i could think of at that time. after that, i couldn't remember what happened.
doctor came, talked to her. she said dad's got pneumonia. his kidneys are o.k but we have to be careful. the only thing they're worried about right now are the lungs. they're infected but the seriousness of the infection was/is unknown. she said dad has to stop smoking (duh) and or risk cancer. right. good luck to us in trying to convince dad to stop smoking. eldest auntie and eldest uncle came to visit. told them what the doctor had told me. mum left. then uncle and auntie left. then there was me.
oh in between those moments, there was this old, old man. he was making a lot of noise. he said he wanted to go back home. he didn't care if he was dying, all he cared about was being home.
that made me think about my future of working away from the family. what if something like this happens in the future again? it is highly very likely to repeat itself. it got me thinking, the fact that some people want to go far, far away and yet they come back. no place, really, feels like home. maybe those who like to travel never got the taste of how home felt/feels like. i love my home. it's comfortable, warm, inviting, memorable. will i reconsider my options of working closer or further from home? yeah of course. i would love to work over here in KL or somewhere far where i could earn money and help my family with their living (i'm not from a well to do family. hence, i need to work hard to provide for them and myself) but is it worth sacrificing time with family for their comfort and security? maybe it is worth it. maybe it is not. only time can tell. but for now my option's working in KL and i've told my family about it. they're not absolutely thrilled about the idea. i was, but now not anymore. not after what's been happening around me with my family. but we live only once, experiences need to be fished from life. opportunities i must learn to grab. i must make wise choices. still got quite a journey to cover. anything could happen. ANYTHING. i've got dreams to, i'm sure my family has their dreams of me too.
sister and boyfriend came. they're happy. makes me sad. i want to be happy too, with someone. so secure, so safe, so loving. they're sweet, her and her boyfriend. she's lucky to have him. he's even luckier to have her. before they came, i sat alone, listening to songs. people were all around me, i felt alone. pathetic? yes. painful? yes. relief? maybe. appreciative? quite.
boyfriend left. cousin came. same age with sister. had a great laugh, the three of us always. dad was still in the emergency. his condition got better. so the three of us roamed the hospital grounds to kill the boredom. we ate, we drank, we laughed some more, mostly about stupid things. that made me happy.
mum came, another auntie came, another elder cousin came, big brother and wife came, little sister and uncle came. we were all there, for my dad. smiling, laughing. no use being sad, and worried, no? better liven up the place than making it all dull and serious, and depressing. really not a good type of atmosphere to be conjured at such a, complex? dangerous? dirty? weird? fun? place.
the doctors are getting younger. some were attractive. the nurses and attendants and some of the people who were there were also attractive. i've never actually wanted to become a doctor. i don't know why. never been interested, not an ounce. i mean, doctors are cool and stuff and like to see them in their white robes, stethoscopes hanging around their neck, rushing here and there, treating (and mistreating) patients. that life's not for me i think. that's probably the biggest reason why i'm not doctor prone, because i was never attracted to become one. told my sister and cousin that if i had gotten better results in my SPM, i would have probably considered becoming a doctor. perhaps.
dad finally got a room after about a day's wait at the hospital. all of us were crowded in that room including two of my sister's friends were there too visit my dad. dad's voice got louder and he was pretty energized compared to the night before. i'm just glad his temperature has gotten lower and so is his blood pressure.
time to leave, the guard said. left mum with dad. i wish i'd marry someone like my mum. patient, kind, caring, understanding. i'd be taking care of dad in the morning til probably early afternoon. working in shifts. mum needs to be there at night. dad couldn't live without her (awwhh).
tired, but learnt a lot. experience about life at its best. Ethos! #eh
p.s: see Haries, my life's not fuckin perfect. screw you man, screw YOU. and oh 2 more hours til the end of 29.2.2012. i hope i'll be alive to witness the other other leap, coming in another 4 years time, approximately.
